Will had a problem building 1.8.3 on Solaris. We eventually determine that he probably ran configure in the source directory, then didn't fully clean up before attempting a build in a separate build tree. Greg confirms that leaving a copy of plugins.so in the source tree would prevent it from being built in the separate build tree, yet the library build process wouldn't find it.
